THIS IS NOT OWL POST

The Edinburgh Festival is over, and we have started our very own Autumnwatch with a juvenile Kestrel perching on Ben’s windowsill: a great vantage point to look over our garden, the Grassmarket and George Heriot’s School. http://www.edinburghhawkwatch.org.uk/kestrel

RAIN SHADOWS

We were lucky to have Andy Goldsworthy and his team using our office as their base in 2015 whilst filming the Edinburgh scenes of ‘Leaning into the Wind’, released this August.  It was fabulous to witness his ephermal creations being made, and the recent Guardian article and interview marking its release makes for a great read.

Glass art

Amongst the many interesting artistic offerings at this year’s Edinburgh Festival Fringe is a joint show featuring Japanese glass artist Keiko Mukaide on Howe Street. Keiko created permanent lit glass works for us at both the Hub and the Queen’s Gallery, both buildings which are worth a visit at any time of the year, but particularly during the Edinburgh Festival in August.

HERMITS & TERMITS OFFICE VISIT

The BTA Team enjoyed a sunny scaffold trip to view the nearly-complete re-slating and re-harling works at Hermits and Termits.  Of particular interest were: ridge tiles, scroll skew-puts, the coat of arms and sunshine.  We also managed a new ‘office’ photo (with most of us in Hi-Viz).

THE DESIGNER OF THE QUEENSFERRY CROSSING HONOURED

On the 1st May at the Royal Society for Edinburgh, RIAS conferred on Naeem Hussain their Honorary Fellowship in recognition of the beauty and effectiveness of his wonderful designs and global achievements.  These include the Øresund Bridge and Tunnel linking Denmark and Sweden, the Stonecutters Bridge in Hongkong, and the Hulme Bridge in Manchester.  He deserves to be a household name as a bridge designer, just as much as Sir Baker …

‘Special Recognition’

Jill Watson‘s amazing 5m (17 feet) long Widows & Bairns memorial in Eyemouth, Berwickshire (for which Benjamin Tindall Architects designed the landscaping) has been given a Special Recognition award in the Scottish Civic Trust’s 2018 My Place Awards scheme.  Its artistic merit and enormous contribution to the area didn’t fit into any category and so a new one had to be invented.  The work …

A ROYAL MILE TOUR FOR HIS ROYAL HIGHNESS

Ben was privileged to meet Sri Sultan Hamengku Buwono X of Yogyakarta, the Governor of Yogyakarta Special Region, to give him and his wife, the Mayor and members of the Yogyakarta government a tour of Edinburgh’s Royal Mile. Yogyakarta, or ‘Jogja’, has a very similar main street, being a mile long between two volcanoes.  The visitors came to Edinburgh to see how …

RUDOLF STEINER

Rudolf Steiner was born on 27th February, 1861.  Steiner’s training as an Architect helped him found a new method of teaching which is now followed worldwide.  We are proud to have helped build the Kindergarten at Edinburgh Steiner School some years back – a building which has shaped so many peoples’ creative lives – and to now be helping the School to develop their …
