Jill Watson‘s amazing 5m (17 feet) long Widows & Bairns memorial in Eyemouth, Berwickshire (for which Benjamin Tindall Architects designed the landscaping) has been given a Special Recognition award in the Scottish Civic Trust’s 2018 My Place Awards scheme.  Its artistic merit and enormous contribution to the area didn’t fit into any category and so a new one had to be invented.  The work commemorates the 78 widows and 182 children who survived the loss of their menfolk in the UK’s worst fishing disaster in 1881 and rebuilt the community, with many of their descendants still living in the area today.
