21 YEARS OF JOHN MUIR AWARDS

On Monday 26th February the John Muir Trust  celebrated 21 years of supporting initiatives and projects connecting people from all walks of life to the positive values of nature. Starting from John Muir’s birthplace in the High Street, the celebrations included indoor and outdoor activities throughout Dunbar. A hot drink and a piece of the splendid cake was much appreciated by everyone. Did you know …

THE HALLOWED SILVER QUAICH

Mark from our office bumped into our client from Edinkist during the Carnethy Hill Race: an impressive 10k and 750m climb over 5 hills. We hear congratulations are due to Win who received the hallowed Silver Quaich for his 21st run – an achievement only 3 others have matched.

ARCHITECTURAL OFFSPRING

Yesterday, our colleague Caroline, who is currently on maternity leave, popped in to the practice with our youngest architectural offspring – Alisdair. Alisdair enjoyed Ben’s guided tour around the practice, while we enjoyed a cuppa and catch-up with Caroline. Check back on our blog to see how much Alisdair has grown since his last visit to Victoria Terrace.

BAG OF GROUT

The team has chipped in to donate  a bag of grout for the much needed repairs to the Boyne Pier at Cove Harbour.  Cove Harbour Conservation Limited has initiated CRAB  (Campaign for Repairs At Boyne) and you can read more about the harbour’s unique character and history and the current threat to the livelihoods of five fishermen and their families on …

PRESERVING PATINA

Together with the engineer Frazer Coutts we discussed the design and approach for straightening the 150mm lean to a fragile wall of a derelict Cottage, which forms part of a C-listed Steading, in order to preserve its character and patina. The contractor, Campbell & Smith, has done a marvellous job jacking the wall.  We are now waiting for the opened up mortar joints …

WHAT WE DID ON OUR HOLIDAY

Silke from our office got to play with a box of Lego Architecture  bricks, which Santa brought her nephew for Christmas.  Architectural competitions were held for a kitchen, chicken houses and zoo enclosure (no photo) and her nephew – as the winner – then moved on to build an art deco cinema.

MADE IN ROTHIEMURCHUS

Will our first design for a bus shelter mark the start of An Camas Mòr?  Made by the Rothiemurchus Estate, it is located on the Ski Road Aviemore to Cairngorm, for the benefit of the public and staff at the Coylumbridge Hotel.

17 CONFECTIONERS’ TERRACE

Our neighbouring building across the terrace, 8-13 Johnston Terrace was once connected to our offices here at 17 Victoria Terrace by way of gangway.  Both premises were owned collectively by Alexander ‘sweetie Sandy’ Ferguson Limited, the famous inventor of ‘Edinburgh Castle Rock’.  Our office was used for storage; that must have been a lot of ‘rock’!

BRRRRRR-LIN

One of our team has just returned from a winter trip to Berlin.  He went all the way to Germany to wonder at work by British architects! Plan your trip.  However, it was the German architect Helmut Jahn’s Potsdamer Platz tent roof that was particularly colourful at night.

THAT’S TIME FLOWN BY

We finally met young Alisdair when he came with his mum Caroline to introduce him to the rest of us.  Hard to believe that it was the end of June when we sent Caroline off with a pirate lunch party.
