WORK AND PLEASURE

Mark from our office was lucky to combine a day surveying a Fisherman’s cottage in Kippford with a weekend sailing on the Solway. He was blessed with one glorious day and a fine starry night (courtesy of their dark sky policy). The next day was only fit for a muddy run through the woods, though a good haul of sloes, …

DOORS OPEN TO THE KEYS OF ST PETER’S

On the 23rd September you’ll have the chance to see inside the fabulous St Peter’s, Lutton Place, one of Edinburgh’s finest Victorian Gothic churches. Our office designed the decoration scheme for the interior in homage to St Peter and the original rich 1860s scheme which got whitewashed in the 1930s. It also uses our signature ‘chandelier’ lights. Doors Open Day is …

PIXELS AND DODDS

We are taking part in the Open Air Gallery around the Grassmarket from 4th-30th September . Local artist Johnny Dodds and Capital Collections have launched this self guided walk to see the unique artworks.  Based on historic photos from the collections of Edinburgh Libraries, Johnny Dodds explores Edinburgh’s past in a way you’ve not seen before.  Find the list of artworks and a …

CROSSING THE NEW QUEENSFERRY CROSSING

Mark from our office was one of the lucky few who won tickets in a poll to walk the beautiful new Queensferry Crossing with his daughters on Saturday 2nd September before it was opened by the Queen and to traffic.

QUEENSFERRY CROSSING

Who designed the wonderful new Forth Bridge? Unlike in Scandinavia, it seems to be a feature of UK society that designers get very little credit; we seem more interested in who retails something. Normally ‘success has many fathers’ but here the father is extraordinarily modest and almost invisible.  His name is Naeem Hussain, studied at the West Pakistan University of Engineering and …

CASTLES & DINOSAURS

Ben and Dan had a trip to Dunrobin Castle and Gardens situated on the North Coast 500.  They came back dwarfed by its scale, beauty and history.  The ‘Dinosaur Food’ (Gunnera manicata) was equally impressive.

FESTIVAL EDITION

The Festivals are happening all around us and we are proud to have created memorable locations for three of them: the Fringe Festival ticket office (left), which has been carefully restored by Graciela Ainsworth , the International Festival Hub (centre), and Jupiter Artland (right) which takes part in the Art Festival.

LOAD TESTING

BTA designed elliptical staircase under structural load test; the sand bags added one by one to achieve 0.45kN/m…. the tension mounted…. A 15mm deflection was measured by DNA from the red laser indicator over a 1hr duration; the structure passed.

AHOY SHIPMATES!

Sadly for us it was Caroline’s last day before leaving to have her second baby.  We sent her off with all the best wishes, some gifts and a civilised lunch at Vittoria‘s, which turned into a raucous pirate party.

LEANING INTO THE WIND

Leaning into the Wind is the documentary sequel to Rivers and Tides about Andy Goldsworthy‘s work.  It is the second collaboration of filmmaker Thomas Riedelsheimer and Andy Goldsworthy and was shot between 2013 and 2016 on various locations around the world.  We have been lucky to provide the team with a base for the Edinburgh shots (see blog from May 2015).  As the first film, it …
