THE IMPORTANCE OF PATINA
For Doors Open Day we welcomed 251 visitors to Victoria Terrace and at hourly intervals gave talks on ‘The Importance of Patina’ . There was a huge range of visitors and questions and a great enthusiasm for architecture.
A central theme of the presentations was to distinguish patina from deterioration and how patina can enhance a building’s significance and character. The focus was on how good conservation depends on understanding what to retain, protect and repair. The presentation explored how architects can conserve patina through careful survey, research and specification, and how new buildings can be designed to age gracefully through appropriate material selection and good workmanship.
