The Edinburgh Festival Fringe
The Fringe shopfront has become a recognisable image throughout the world; it has almost become the image of the Festival.
The ‘shop window’ was designed as a proscenium arch framed by ‘caryatids’ modeled by Gerald Scarfe in collaboration with the Practice and lit by the world’s first specially designed pavement lights.
Behind the shop are offices, connected to the ticket office below and storage. By removing the lower sections of the tenement stair we gained the flexibility required backstage to cope with huge numbers of people during the Festival.
During the Festival there are always free performances right in front of the shop on the Royal Mile and people love having their photo taken.
