St John’s Church, Cupar
St John’s Church in Cupar, Fife, is a B-listed church with a landmark steeple. Following some emergency repairs after fallen masonry in 2010, the project of external repairs to stonework and roof was grant funded by Heritage Lottery.
Rusting embedded ferrous metal fixing caused in some areas sever damage to high level masonry of the steeple. There was also extensive spalling and loss of lime mortar to joints. The mid-steeple with damaged pinnacles also had a lichen build-up on the stonework and the lancet and quatrefoil openings required bird protection.
The steeple internally needed permanent access to the upper levels, some consolidation to the masonry and the belfry floor required replacement of decayed timbers and weather proofing.
While access to the steeple was provided, we discovered that the cockerel weathervane was about to fall off. It was taken off and a careful copy produced and installed.
