Ossian’s Hall – Perthshire

One of Scotland’s finest Picturesque buildings, Ossian’s Hall has been a favourite visitor attraction for more than 200 years.

The Hermitage, Dunkeld

Full Description

The Grade B listed building had become run down and unappreciated and the National Trust for Scotland’s challenge for the Practice was to bring back the lost sensations of ‘surprise and wonder’.

A trompe-l’œil external door was added, the original inner door that “split asunder” was investigated and redesigned in a contemporary manner, and the lost mirrors of the Hall were reinterpreted with specially commissioned artwork from the Scottish artist Calum Colvin with text by the Scottish writer Aonghas MacNeacail. The combined effect of the images with the spray of the adjacent Black Linn falls is as it might have been 200 years ago.

A glazed screen moderates the environment and allows the building to be used for events.
