Highland Cottage, Alteration and Extension

Located in a picturesque part of the highlands, this traditional single storey stone cottage was in a poor state of repair and hadn’t been used for some years. The brief was for a retirement home with 2 bedrooms and good storage.

Full Description

The whole building is insulated to a very high standard.  The heating is a combination of a ground source heat pump with underfloor heating and wood burning stoves.

The original cottage was repaired and new contemporary extensions added at both gable ends.  Reduced in scale they maintain the prominence of the original cottage when viewed from the road.  Natural materials are used: larch cladding, oak trusses, local stone flooring, limewash to stonework.  Full height ceilings in part of the extensions provide a generous volume which is in contrast to the cosy low ceilings of the cottage.  The garage and workshop form a group with the cottage, retaining the overall small scale.
