TONKA V. GEOMORPHOLOGY
January’s incredible rains washed out the main A93 Braemar to Aberdeen road opposite Abegeldie Castle next to Balmoral. The River Dee created a new meander where the bank and its road was once straight. Unfortunately the next and opposite bend washed away 10m of bank and a line of mature trees, reducing the castle’s foundation to a vertical bank of gravel. Action to restore matters has been remarkably quick; procedures which normally take months or years were bypassed as rapidly as the river.
