LEANING INTO THE WIND

Leaning into the Wind is the documentary sequel to Rivers and Tides about Andy Goldsworthy‘s work.  It is the second collaboration of filmmaker Thomas Riedelsheimer and Andy Goldsworthy and was shot between 2013 and 2016 on various locations around the world.  We have been lucky to provide the team with a base for the Edinburgh shots (see blog from May 2015).  As the first film, it …

Temporarily re-opened for one week 25 years after last closing its doors, the wonderful art deco Leith Theatre and its rabbit warren of backstage spaces is a fabulous venue for another packed programme of events for Hidden Door 2017.  We recommend checking it out before it finishes on Sunday, 4th June. EDINBURGH’S 101 OBJECTS

In celebration of 2017 being the year of ‘History, Heritage and Archaeology’, a bespoke website has been filled with 101 Objects highlighting Edinburgh’s most intriguing treasures.  It is 70 years since the city exploded with arts festivals and 250 years since Edinburgh decided to expand with a plan for a New Town. “UNEXPECTED THINGS CAN HAPPEN AT PARTIES”

It is nice to be reminded of all the different boats that Ben steers, not just our office. In his most recent ‘Unfiltered’ interview, he discusses his experiences of being a founding member of the Scotch Malt Whisky Society, as well as talking about his Harbour Master duties at Cove. To read the full tale (p14), along with an interview with our good …

6 DECADES

A very happy looking Carrie on her Big Birthday.  We celebrated with a lunch at Howies, finishing with a six-tier-eth cake.  Half the office was involved in this bake-off (note that this high rise structure was not checked by a Structural Engineer or Fire Engineer).  We couldn’t have found a better present than the beautiful  spring lamb sculpture by Jill Watson.

IS THIS ADDING TO EDINBURGH’S WORLD HERITAGE?

The resemblance is scary but comparing the latest Royal High School hotel proposals to Gasometers could be seen as an insult to Gasometers (see Hilla and Bernd Becher‘s concise photographic survey). If you feel you want to make an objection or comment, the deadline is 24th March 2017. The AHSS has produced downloadable ‘How to Object‘ guidelines or go directly to Edinburgh City Development Portal.

THE ‘LOVE STORY’ OF THE 20TH CENTURY

The Practice has worked for Sara Trevelyan and Jimmy Boyle almost since they were married.  This has included what was the Gateway Exchange, the Wash House and their house in Inverleith Place, Edinburgh.  Sara has written ‘Freedom Found – a memoir’, an intelligent, clever life story of her own personal journey that portrays the greatest sensitivity and includes some account of these …

NATURAL PAINT

We were privileged to have Edward Bulmer from Edward Bulmer Natural Paint in our office to quiz him about his paints, and hear the stories behind them and their ingredients, before using them for the first time on a new windows project. We like to give our visitors a tour of our building and show what we do.  Later we received this …
