“A CATHEDRAL IN MINIATURE”

St Mary’s Lochee, “a Cathedral in Miniature” of considerable distinction, designed by one of the very best Victorian architects, Joseph Aloyisus Hansom, has just completed the first phase of repairs by George Martin of Dundee, with much local funding and grants from HES, National Churches Trust, Benefact Trust, Garfield Weston Foundation, Northwood Charitable Trust Fife Environmental Trust, FCC Community  & Neighbourhood Capital Fund.

The 1866 Gothic Revival design emphasises the altar by creating by a tower of light from high and large windows at the end of a comparatively long and dark arcaded nave.  The effect is enhanced by a dark stained ceiling and the colourful trefoil clerestory windows.  The arcade and walls are of an exceptional polychromatic construction of sandstone, brick and cast terracotta elements, of excellent workmanship.

Further phases of work are being planned.
