8 HOMES FOR BARRA & VATERSAY HOUSING ASSOCIATION
Cuithir, Isle of Barra

These 8 houses were built following a year-long community consultation.

 The longhouse plan and distinctive curved ends evolved during this process reducing heat loss due to wind chill and suiting the sloping site.  The east-west alignment optimises passive solar gain, reduces wind noise, and makes the most of the views.   Local low maintenance and long-life materials were used where possible, keeping within strict cost limits. 

The project received a Civic Trust Commendation in 2003.
